About the Artist

Landscape painter Kristina Maus works in acrylics, watercolour and pencil, and has produced a body of work over the years that celebrates her passion for the natural world. Subject matter is as varied as the ever changing seasons of rural Ontario.

Kristina began her art career as a book illustrator and graphic artist in the 80s, illustrating seven books, returned to U of W to add some formal art training to her undergrad degree, and completed a Bachelor of Education at Western, junior intermediate art focus.  Having enjoyed a successful career as the art teacher with the Bluewater Board, in retirement she is focusing on her own art practice.

Maus lives outside of Paisley on a farm, and is presently a Gallery Artist at the Southampton Arts Centre and a member of Studio XX painters in Chatsworth.

Artist's Statement

I paint and draw for the pure enjoyment of it.  Nature is a never ending source of personal amazement; the more I observe and study, the more I learn. Light is inspiring, how it illuminates the ordinary and reveals it as extraordinary; lack of light provides a different feel. I endeavour to share the excitement and beauty of these shifts with the viewer.  Evening light caressing a farmer’s field, a rock welcoming waves, a solitary tree guarding a valley, a discarded flower, images like these reflect our own journeys, so are meaningful to me and become subject matter.

One of my goals as an acrylic landscape painter is to celebrate the forests, gardens, hiking trails, shorelines as they change with the seasons; hoping that if more people see them through my eyes, they will be encouraged to get out there enjoy. Regardless of how successful I am, it’s a great excuse to spend time outdoors myself!
